Has anyone suggested that Kernel devs *have* sold out? Because if so, I haven't seen it. It would be a ridiculous claim anyway.

uh, but it was stated at a presentation at a Linux conference by a Linux developer. I could be mistaken, but I doubt he was trying to insinuate that kernel developers had "sold out".
