My 6-year-old uses Gcompris, Childsplay and TuxPaint on the Ubuntu Hardy laptop I set up for her some time ago (and I'm glad I stuck with Hardy on this Gateway Solo 1450 with the dreaded Ubuntu i810 graphics, unlike with my Toshiba of the same vintage, which would probably run almost as well on today's patched Hardy as it does on Debian Lenny).

She loves those programs, and they actually are pretty educational. TuxPaint has a whole lot of features, and she does a lot of drawing with it (as well as "regular" drawing with paper and pens/pencils/crayons/paints).

I'm not sure how active the development is for these apps, but they're well-worth supporting, and I'd welcome more educational software for Linux/Unix.
