Besides the obvious fact that the head LXer Editor-in-Chief submitted this LinuxPlanet piece, how does this piece have any specific relation to Linux or F/OSS ? For that matter, how does this "Howto" piece even fall under the category of a 'News story' ???

Because:

1. A large niche for Linux is DIY-types.

2. Linux has strong support for Ethernet. QED, NB, NA, BBQ.

I see "news" here as referring to "new stuff to read that a linux user might be interested in", regardless of the type. :) Besides, the submission form has included such things as "editorial", "review", "tutorial" etc. from the beginning and none of those are technically "news stories" in a typical sense. And I'm fine with that.

I agree with gus3 and Libervis. This is an entirely appropriate piece for LXer.com IMNSHO.

I thought it was useful.

The article also referred to simple cable testers. Can anyone recommend me some? I've seen a few kits but those are always really expensive.

I thought it was useful as well. I also posted it to my computers Forum on the Freethinkers Pub Social site, there are people there who will also appreciate it.

I figured it was at least informative and not blatantly off topic for LXer.

@Scott, I agree with you and everyone else that this is very useful and informative. Maybe you could even post other DIY things here like this, such as how to DIY better-transmitting antennas for wireless access points. Okay, maybe a better-transmitting DIY WAP antenna is irrelevant -- it just came to my mind of the top of my head. The point is that this is SOMETHING is useful HW-wise.

My only small beef here is that Weiss's DIY article really should have been put in the category of a Tutorial rather than a news story. It's right in the title and DIY IS descriptive of Weiss's writing and pictures within. On that point alone, I disagree with Liberis and agree with vv.. but no apologies needed :) -fb

Here's another one. This is for a directional antenna instead of a dish, like gus' article: http://www.h-online.com/features/Build-a-Wi-Fi-radio-relay-u...
