Quoting:You should definitely try this if you are a fan of movies such as Star Trek, Star Wars, or anything else involving spaceships of all sizes in space fighting, merchandising, and exploring.

Sounds more like they're targeting fans of the Elite series (that includes me). I might give it a try! [Some time. In the future. Probably.]

It sounds like fun, but probably it's too "involved" for me. It sounds too much like an MMORPG. I like my games simple. I'm a big fan of the old X-Wing, TIE-Fighter and X-Wing v.s. TIE-Fighter games. No-nonsense action :-)

jezuch: For you I recommend the games X2 and X3, both with Linux native ports. They are both very rich, and you can own an entire fleet of ships, and fly any one yourself, or command them through software modules, or by hiring pilots. I'm someone who started my love for the genre with Elite on a ZX Spectrum, and X2 was just the fix I needed.

Sander: Jets & Guns. It's an insane side-scrolling shooter. Mental I tell you, mental.

These are commercial titles.

Side scrolling? No thanks. Those are button mashing twitch games and not flight/space sims.

There's a VegaStrike mod out there that sets up a game as much like _Privateer_ as they can make it. I really enjoyed _Privateer_, and considering the machine it ran on it was no resource hog. Another closed-source game that really deserves to be opened so it could live again.

I like immersive games like Vendetta Online, if you've seen it. I went there for the Linux client, and stayed for a while for the game itself.

Does anyone else remember StarFlight?

It would be wonderful if "they" would throw open that game. What fabulous code that fit that entire game on two floppies!

I've also had no luck with VegaStrike on Debian at all. Maybe I'll try again now with Lenny. Last two times it would launch, but then I couldn't do anything. Trying to fly out of dock would just put the game into a blank screen and buzzing noise.

Thanks for the suggestion! (And more choice of wasting time, of course ;) ) I'll definitely take a look.

I installed it to try because the description reminded me of Star Glider that we used to have on the Amiga, it was a fun game. Unfortunately the key that was for moving the ship didn't move the ship.
