Once burned, twice shy, eh?

I think they got burned on explicity 32-bit Win32, introduced just as all major Unixes released initial 64-bit OSes. Win32 was an obvious design mistake, even in 1993 (I think that's when Win32 came out).

So, having gotten burned, they're going to skip a transition to 64-bitness, and just go whole hog into 128-bitness.

My other prediction: the "I love linux as much as the next guy" folks will start saying that they "can't recommend linux, as it doesn't have a 128-bit filesystem."

You heard it here first. Mark my words.

Easy rejoinder: "So, is that an implicit admission that, for 32 years, Microsoft has been on the wrong track with FAT?" (FAT12 first arrived in 1977.)

The next talking point will be about NTFS. Same response, since NTFS is just a fraternal twin to Dave Cutler's baby, Files-11 from VMS.
