I thought the US had done away with the export restrictions on cryptographic technology? The restrictions only hinder US-based companies and projects. They don't help at all. Perhaps two decades ago when the US had some kind of technological leadership the restrictions could have helped keeping advanced cryptography out of the hands of $BAD_PEOPLE but the US has long lost it's lead. Equal and better cryptography can be had from all around the world.

I thought the US dropped the restrictions when they realised they did not have a significant lead anymore and were only hurting their own companies.

There were significant changes, but I don't believe they were dropped completely. I don't have time to look up the details right now. :(

I recall way back in the early days of Netscape you could install the strong encryption by checking a box that said "I am a citizen of the US and not some bad person outside the US!" It made me feel all safe and warm.

The laws themselves were not changed, "discretion" was exercised by the enforcement bureaucracies.

Which means, at its most basic, that if the bureaucrats ever have a reason to change their mind, they can tighten up enforcement, and confuse the issue again.

Back to the "debian-non-us" repository, since it was never illegal to IMPORT strong encryption, just export it.

See Bob, it is possible to discuss politics in a FOSS context without violating the TOS.

@Bob

I guess I should have added serious tags: that was a political post, and I personally didn't see anything wrong with it. "Even for you" was not an attack. You've been the one most at the center of TOS debates, having threads deleted, yet this post touched on politics without ruffling any feathers.

In order to prevent any more discussion of the TOS, which would truly be a tragedy, I request that if you want to discuss my comment further we do so by email. Better yet, I'll delete my previous comment, which was not really important.
