If the Intel driver performance issues are finally nearly fixed this is very good news, and not just for Ubuntu.

The difference is remarkable - I'm running koala alpha 4 on my backup workstation w/ i945 integrated graphics, and the compiz cube and various effects are smooth and snappy. The same machine was almost unusable under jaunty, and I certainly couldn't run any fancy effects back then. FWIW, the glxgears performance figure is about an order of magnitude higher than it was under jaunty as well.

Glad to hear it. I have a 945GME chipset in my netbook. I'll definitely give Karmic a try at least when it's released if not sooner.

The kernel shipping with Jaunty had definite issues with Intel netbook 3D chips. I installed a patched 2.6.29.11 kernel from a 3rd party site, to fix it.

@gus3: I did too, as well as newer Intel drivers. Performance still stank. It went from unusable to poor which wasn't good enough to me. Downgrading the Intel driver to 2.4.1 helped a bit more but in the end I stuck with Hardy and dumped Jaunty. Mandriva 2009.1 was even worse.

I'm sticking with 8.04 until all of this gets sorted out ...

@Steven_Rosenberg: It is getting sorted out. Aside from an occasional very brief second of video corruption which immediately clears itself the Intel driver in Pardus is working perfectly for me with their 2.6.30.4 kernel. Performance is really good. If Pardus can do it then so can Ubuntu. I think by the time Karmic releases most of this will be behind us.
