The Intel 2.8.0 driver no longer supports EXA or DRI. With the latest driver you are forced to use UXA and DRI2. I have a 2.7.99.x driver in Pardus 2009 and the performance is quite good. There are no more crashes. Unfortunately, with my Intel Express Graphics 945GM chipset in my netbook I still get the horizontal lines across newly opened windows and a bit of a stutter when new windows are opened in KDE 4.2.4 with 3D effects turned on. In other words, some of the bugs in the Intel driver have been fixed but others simply haven't. I've tried 2.8.0 in some alpha releases and it's exactly the same.

In general the delayed release of X.org server 1.7 may be a good thing if it means more bugs get fixed.
