70,000?

So Ubuntu has nearly 3 times as many packages as Debian Unstable?

This was from this morning, with Debian-Multimedia added in for good measure:

===== Replacing available packages info, using /var/cache/apt/available. Information about 26238 package(s) was updated. =====

Now I agree that 6K compares as small next to 26K, but where does that 70K come from I wonder?

A wc -l allpackages.txt (downloaded from http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/) gives 28205 lines, some of which compose a header. The equivalent file for Jaunty is 30179 lines. So I'd say there are more like 30000 packages.

Now, how many of those are meta packages, etc.; I can't say.

Oh, in comparison, the list for Sid gives 32993.

Also in comparison, the full Slackware 12.2 install seems to be around 1000 packages.

Small repositories are better? Gee, let's take choices away from people! That'll make them happy...`NOT!

One reason I decided not to run CentOS outside of my business uses is that I really don't want to have to build my own packages... lots of them... for things I use every day. Even with all the third party repositories the choices available for a desktop (not server) user on CentOS are paltry.

Though I have enormous respect for Dag Wieers and the rest of those who are bringing packages into CentOS/RHEL, I have to agree that it's hard to run CentOS as a general (or specific) desktop simply because the packages are not there.

Fedora, however, has pretty much everything I need, but I haven't yet had the itch to actually install it.
