Here's hoping that x-server 1.6 won't play havoc with my intel video card... |

x-server isn't the issue. Ubuntu has demonstrated that you can use the older Intel drivers with the newer server. The big issue is what version the Intel driver they use. Sadly it's: xf86-video-intel-2.7.1-i486-1.txz which means that the Intel driver regression will, in fact, bite Slackware users. If Patrick has done some magic or included some kind of fix I'll be thrilled. If not, well... |

Usually, though, I have found that whenever the x-server is upgraded so are the drivers that usually accompany it. I guess time will tell... |

Slackware.com seems to have been effectively offline for the past two days, so I haven't been able to check the current status. :( |

Jdixon, I noticed that as well... I wonder if they are preparing for the new announcement of Slackware 13.0? Still, the site should still be up. I hope all is well. |

@caitlyn I've thought of using the older drivers with the newer X server. I went from using the i810 driver, which was supposed to be a huge problem, to the Intel driver, which was supposed to solve huge problems ... but X went from working to not working in OpenBSD (going from 4.4 to 4.5). And I've tried to work with xorg.conf in Ubuntu 9.04, but the fix that worked for me in Debian Lenny (got the fix from the Arch forums: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61433) no longer works in Ubuntu 9.04. I never tried that xorg.conf fix in OpenBSD -- had to wipe it and get the laptop working; I just didn't have my usual futzing time. For those who might be sharing my pain, this is the graphics chip I'm working with: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC Clearly those who code Xorg hate me and everyone else with Intel graphics hardware. |

I just came across this: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/request... http://connie.slackware.com/~rworkman/xorg-testing/ |
