So... Jolicloud is a "slightly tweaked" version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix with integration for cloud apps that Jolicloud, the company, will control and presumably make money from. Thanks but no thanks. I'm usually not one to agree with RMS but I share his skepticism about cloud computing and see it as potentially dangerous. I'd like to keep my personal data local, thankyouverymuch. Putting it out in the clouds with some company managing it, perhaps looking at it, mining it, etc... is not for me. It also means trusting someone else with the security of my data. A startup company may or may not have good security. WIth no track record to show me there is no way I am going to trust them with my personal data.

I've been through one rather painful identity theft already which was enabled by poor mail server security on the part of the hosting company I was using at the time. I don't ever want to go through that again.

As a more general point, even the most well-established, financially stable companies can have security problems. And then we have to ask what happens to the data if the company goes bankrupt or just loses interest in the project.

Simple, becomes a company asset that is sold off to the highest bidder. Just like your registration information when a site dies.

I agree with both of you, which is why I will never get into cloud computing, formerly network computing, formerly several other names when companies failed to pitch it. Even many non-technical consumers understand that this is a bad idea. It's just common sense.

Well, obviously they have not yet gone far enough up the corporate ladder. Just wait, it will be a big success!
