Today the tech press is full of stories about how Asus has already pulled this netbook and won't be bringing it to market, at least for now. Sad. I've posted the new story and also one that questions if Microsoft is actually buying off netbook vendors.

Soooo....with all of this going on, do browsers still seem important? Pf no I say. Big deal if the EU forces MS to include Firefox or something if Windows PCs are all there are.

There are some small or new vendors dedicated to non-MS systems. Lemote, who make MIPS based netbooks, notebooks, and desktops are pushing the Loongson-2F chip which has the backing of the Chinese government. The government of China does have the resources to take on MS, methinks. iUnika in Spain, who are just reselling SkyTone products, is another. SkyTone is yet another Chinese company with ARM and MIPS based systems that they license to all sorts of people.

But, yeah... the major Western vendors are definitely being either bought off or intimidated away from Linux.

The only places where you could buy the SkyTone in my country were a toy store and Mediamarkt - the latter asked €250 for a product that only costed them $150. Says enough.

hkwnt: You can definitely buy some of the SkyTone dervative products online in Europe. That's better than nothing. I have little hope for Linux in brick and mortar stores right now.

Tekmote, which is in your conutry, is selling the Lemote computers online. They ship worldwide and if I decide to get one (and I am thinking about it) I will actually be ordering from the Netherlands.

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols at ComputerWorld sees the pulling of the Asus EeePC with an ARM CPU running Android as efinitely orchestrated by (or forced by) Microsoft:

I've submitted the story to LXer. Definitely worth a read.

""Frankly speaking, the first question, I would like to apologize that, if you look at Asus booth we've decided not to display this product," he said. "I think you may have seen the devices on Qualcomm's booth but actually, I think this is a company decision so far we would not like to show this device. That's what I can tell you so far. I would like to apologize for that"

Holy Kindapped Batman!!!

It sounds like this guy had a gun pointed at him in his back and forced to say what he said. When will the DOJ make this insanity end.

Can some one please tell the DOJ that microsoft has not changed their ways and never will and need a severe and harsh punishment. No other industry has any company been able to do what microsoft has done.

Computing could be so much if microsoft wasn't holding society and the industry back.

The DOJ has no jurisdiction in Taiwan :(

But Asus and Microsoft sell in the US.

That is most certainly true. The E.U should get involved as well. They've shown slightly more backbone than the U.S. government.

Hey Carla, can you provide me with your contact details? I started working on this issue, and need your help on this. I'm not sure if your mai ladress provided at http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/au/1909 is still functional; as it is published on the web I'm sure it's full of spam.

Carla or Caitlyn? If you mean Caitlyn the address on O'Reilly is good and, surprisingly, gets little SPAM. My old mail address is SPAM ridden but not the gmail one.... at least not yet :) By all means drop me a note. It may be later tonight (my time) before I can answer. I'm just taking a cooling down break from cutting the lawn right now.

I meant tuxchick (should have said that!), but anyone willing to help is appreciated. I was looking for someone to help me with English language when writing my complaint; but two minutes ago I decided to ask help from FSFE.

Obviously you're interested, so I'll BCC you as well so you know "what's happening". Something with 'release early releaes often'. I can't promise anything is going to happen at all, but it's a first attempt.

Look at your inbox; hopefully you received a BCC (for the brrt-address an 'inbedded FWD' as that's what KMail liked). Don't mind the lack of quality of the document, it's a draft put together in only two hours or so. Which is pretty hard when OOo formatting is just as bad or worse as the one found in MS Word. Now 'we' need to collect info. Tomorrow sounds like a fine day to do so I guess.

Great minds think alike, ain't it?

Why didn't any decent newssite (including LXer; I take responsibility as well) didn't cover this?

I missed it or I would have submitted it. Sorry. I assume you've put it in the queue.

I wish I could read the original. Some of the translation is, um... interesting. Yeah, that's a good word for it. Interesting.

You can read the original, but it's in Italian ;)

I did an attempt to contact them and ask what EC replied. Now I'm going to get some sleep.
