"proprietary software is holding us back as a society" yes I have been telling people this for years. for our society to advance software has to be pervasive and open source fills the bill. the mobile phone industry could really be so much more if it was ran different. I have a blackberry and I can't stand it. the software is so closed and it basically is the windows of mobile phone devices. it is slow, crashes, and is not flexible. when my contract expires I am going to give the palm treo a spin and see how it goes but I used to have a handspring palm pocket and I loved it. tons of software and did what I wanted it to do and of course synced with my favorite os. |

In the left corner: LiMo, Android, QT Extended. Right corner: Apple, RIM. Not yet decided: WinMobile (said to be more open than Apple/RIM). Wearing the invisable cloak in this fight: Symbian. Make your bets! And remember: Ex-softie suggests taking the left corner! OK, rien ne va plus! Now, if only anyone could tell me when the referee will raise the arm of the winner, I could sleep until the battle is over. Because I don't even have a clue what OS my phone runs. |

jsusanka, sorry to burst your hopes for the future - stay away from Winmo based Palms. I can honestly say that, windows mobile is the windows of mobile phone devices....I have a backup program on mine which does a hard reset every day as part of the backup. Never had to do a restore but it means [on a good day] I can go without manually rebooting the thing. On a bad day (especially when using the GPS), it'll need two or three manual reboots. I have a Palm Treo Pro (aka 850) with Windows Mobile 6.1 on it. My Treo 750v with 6.0 was slightly less reliable, although that was way more reliable than the 750v with 5.0 on it. Overall, it's not so bad - fits my needs better than the current iphone. Don't rely on it being more stable/reliable than your blackberry device though. |

Palm Pre runs on Linux. Is that an alternative? |

Yes - the new coming Palm Pre runs neither the old PalmOS or Windows Mobile - I believe it is some kind of linux. It looks very nice, and I imagine that it'll be a long while before it hits the NZ market - if at all. |

>> Palm Pre runs on Linux. Is that an alternative? Releases in the US on June 6th. Runs a Linux based OS that they are calling WebOS. |

"Releases in the US on June 6th. Runs a Linux based OS that they are calling WebOS." That is great to hear. Will definitely have to check it out. |
