From Wikipedia article on WIPO:Quoting:The Washington Post reported in 2003 that Lois Boland (USPTO Director of International Relations) said "that open-source software runs counter to the mission of WIPO, which is to promote intellectual-property rights." Also saying, "To hold a meeting which has as its purpose to disclaim or waive such rights seems to us to be contrary to the goals of WIPO." Notwithstanding my stance on "IP", I have difficulty seeing WIPO turning into anything but yet another UN bureaucratic boondoggle. |

> Notwithstanding my stance on "IP", I have difficulty seeing WIPO turning into anything but yet another UN bureaucratic boondoggle. Has anything by the UN turned out, over time, to be anything else? |

Please, its in the public interest for the UN to be in the standards business about as much as it is for them to be in the business of marital counseling ... if that is they can come up with a functional definition of marriage. Since no government has hit on that one yet ... why should we let them tackle any of the really challenging problems? |

Me, Bob, and az agreeing... Isn't that the first horseman of the Apocalypse? |

Bob - The UN servers a verify valuable purpose in the world. Without the UN, we could never be UNfettered, UNburderned, or UNinhibited. Of course, we could never be Unhappy or UNcertain, either. Most of all, we could never enjoy the refreshing taste of the UN-cola. |

@gus3: Here's a shocker for you: I agree with you, with Bob, and with az. I could go into a rather long rant about the U.N. but it would be a TOS violation for sure. |

That's the first sign of the UL taking over LXer (United LXerers). |
