I took a look at Linpus Lite...

...which is preinstalled on the Aspire One and was decidedly unimpressed. It's a Fedora 8 respin with one of those oh-so-dumbed-down desktops. Yes, you can get to a conventional desktop as well. Linpus essentially does a frugal install a la Damn Small Linux. That isn't bad from a security standpoint but it does make doing upgrades a bit more challenging. Linpus Lite has the necessary tools to get around that but their repositories are from hunger: very limited, very slow connections to the servers in Taiwan, no mirrors outside of Asia, and many updates needed to close security vulnerabilities simply not available. You can use Fedora packages to get around these issues but how many netbook users would be comfortable doing that? Basically I like the instant on idea but I just don't trust the distribution. |

Hi there, I am also possed the Aspire One machine, when I brought the machine, the sale guy reminded me to perform live update. I did and found that the update server is at Singapore. After talking with people in Asipireone forum, I noticed that this company has used the so-called CDN method to spread the end user for performing the update based on geographical region. So, I am not sure why caitlyn mentioned that slow connection to server in Taiwan. Of course, I can use YUM to update or install Fedora RPM. Dragonball Goku |

For the record: I don't own an Aspire One. I downloaded Linpus Lite from their FTP site. Updates, when I tried some months back, all came from Taiwan at least for me. Yes, you can install anything built for Fedora 8. No problem. How many new netbook users know that? How many will figure it out? |

I have an Aspire One and I must say I find it perfectly good for what it's intended. Updates work fine for me, the repository has everything I've wanted so far and it's fast enough (amazingly fast to boot). I would agree that the procedure to enable root and repository is arcane. |
