They can keep the term. It doesn't really describe the "new class" of laptops/notebooks as the machines are, with the right OS far more powerful than simply appliances for "surfing" the web.

Yeah, anymore I'd say they are more appropriately put in the subnotebook class since that's really what they are.

The new netbooks aren't any different from the old small subnotebooks. Think the Toshiba Libretto series, the Mitsubishi Amity CN and CN2, and for those with really long memories the IBM PC-350. The difference, as Linus Torvalds pointed out in a recent interview, is that we used to pay a premium for extra small and lightweight machines. Now they are they least expensive things out there, one of the big reasons they've caught on the way they have.

Nobody thought of a Toshiba Libretto as crippled. It was just small. The same is true for most netbooks today.
