Typical MS M.O. Use old technology. Extend it way past its useful lifespan. Keep the extension secret in the hope of hampering competitors. Fleece the customer for the umpteenth time with software that is bit rotten, unreliable and ancient, but sold at high prices.

Didn't they do almost the same thing with CD formats in Vista? I seem to remember an article about the default file system for burning files to CD in Vista, which was of course incompatible with anything but Vista...
