Is it just me, or is Windows terminology creeping around?

First directories became "Folders", and eventually the term slunk into Linux. Now daemons are becoming "services"? |

it gets worse, i've even encountered problems related to programs looking at a file extension rather than mime type to determine what type of file theyre opening..... |

But it isn't "/etc/daemons", it's "/etc/services". |

It's not just you. :( |

'services' is a Windows term? Dang..... |
DrDubious Jan 20, 2009 5:27 PM EDT |
@gus3 yes, there's an /etc/services that maps port numbers to names...but note that it's not "Berkely Internet Name Service" (and the actual executable isn't called "names"). Spamassassin runs "spamd", not "spams". The Common Unix Printing System is "cupsd" not "cupss"...etc. I think it was Windows NT where they started referring to background processes like that as "services". Next thing you know, using scp to transfer a file between mobile devices will start being called "squirting(tm)" and that will herald the End Of The World. |

@DrD: No argument there. I'm just pointing out that both terms are used visibly in Unix/Linux, and it's probably been in Unix since before Windows NT. |

I thought services was kind of linked to the microkernel architecture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microkernel Quoting:Actual operating system services, such as device drivers, protocol stacks, file systems and user interface code are contained in user space |

hmm, on all my systems it's /etc/init.d/ |
