Have to agree on how good konqueror is. When I occasionally have to use Windows it makes Windows explorer seem like the pathetic file manager it is! If I need to do ftp I always use konqueror and find myself using it for browsing the Internet more and more these days. If a flash movie on something like you tube crashes, it doesn't shut down the whole browser like the ever increasingly buggy Firefox 3 does; it just gives the KDE error dialogue, you can shut that dialogue down, hit refresh and it reloads the movie. KDE4 (at least with Mandriva seems to push Dolphin (although konqueror is still there) and although Dolphin is not bad, it just doesn't seem as good as konqueror (yet). I have no problems with the detail/icon view in Mandriva of any flavour for quite some time. View | View Mode | Detailed List View and then Settings | Save View Profile et voilà! |

The author made some good suggestions about Konqueror, including the comment about learning how to make configuration changes by reading the documentation. Turns out that I have also used the "Load Profile" and "Save Profile" features for many years already. As a test and an example one time, I recall setting the default home page for the Web Browsing view, then setting the parameters for the file and folder view as well. Just to make things interesting, I set the size of the Konqueror window to different sizes for Web (larger) and file (smaller), and I also tried to see if I could get them come up in specific locations on the screen, and that all seemed to work. Perhaps some of the features were obscure, but I did not find it difficult at all. If nothing else, I found the features to be rich, and not buried too deep in some obscure location. Getting into the "Load Profile" section is the biggest trick; not that hard to find at all. |

I use Konqueror by default, only going to Iceweasel(firefox) when I visit a site that needs it, like YouTube or Gmail. (too-heavy java scripting and flash plug-in) I especially like the little icon at the lower right, that flags "this site has HTML errors." It just seems lighter than Iceweasel with lots of tabs open, and I like the fish:/, sftp:/, zip:/ and other very useful local and remote file functionality. Hopefully, when KDE4 is unavoidable, I'll be able to un-separate the local file manipulation from the web browser like it is now. |
