Hey, be nice to Matt. He survived the assassination of Mad Penguin. Remember when it was purchased by Itech Media back in 2006? http://www.linux.com/articles/56843 I seem to recall us wise old LXer regulars going "oh no, well it was nice while it lasted." Sure enough, the new owners killed it. Funny how often that happens. While I was looking for some Mad Penguin links, I was reminded of the poor stewardship of Sourceforge, Inc. Anyone remember Newsforge? It was unceremoniously killed off some time ago, and its archives discarded. Now I bet that Linux.com is going the same way. Whenever some suit says "We don't need to pay writers, we'll get free content from user forums!" you know that site death is right around the corner. |

"Sure enough, the new owners killed it. Funny how often that happens." funny I was having this conversation the other day with a friend. I also want to mention how hard all the vendors are making it for linux on servers in the corporations. For example, On Dell, HP, and IBM servers the web interface requires active x for the console to work through the browser when you access it remotely. Why? I asked reps from all the companies that serve my company six months ago and have yet to receive and answer. Veritas, veritas has numerous bugs in their sofware that make it very difficult if not impossible to patch the linux kernel. Why? Have asked reps and they can't even explain the bugs and the problem. They of course just say upgrade to the latest version and the bugs will be fixed. Ah nothing like corporate america. Just keep paying and eventually we will have a usable product. Oracle, Why does oracle require the installation of the gnome desktop to run their oracle rac implementation. This is obscene to have to install desktop software to run oracle rac server software. EMC - they have agents that run that just take tons of resources on Linux. Asked EMC and they said that it is just the way it is. What a joke These are just a few examples off the top my head. But I personally think they are all puppets of a certain master. They have hired numerous people who either consulted or worked for a company that is based in Redmond. I am trying to convince people in my company that we do not need any of these tools for linux and I am making certain inroads but it is a struggle. Anyway my two cents worth I think the arms of a certain company stretch further than we think. |

This article is not only worth reading, I learned something. Windows software installation is not always as simple as the conventional wisdom suggests. I regularly get stuck installing software on Windows for others. Win-get looks like quite a helpful tool in several ways: a. Finding the correct file and installing it, particularly if you deviate from repeatedly clicking "Next". b. Updating. c. So much of the "free" software for Windows is actually malware. This would give a trusted source for installing software. d. It would get Windows users out of the stone age wrt software installation. They would realize that Linux package management is much better than the do everything yourself approach most Windows users employ. |

Holy crudpies, jsusanka, I know you're not making that all up, but it sure sounds like fiction. Bad fiction by rabid nutpeople who hate everything! As usual, reality is weirder. |

well it definitely is not fiction it is stuff that I deal with every fricken day and it gets old really quick. the being puppets part maybe be stretching it and is purely opinion but what can I do when I get no factually answers from the companies themselves. it is not being rabid at all just frustrated because I have to deal with the vendors cruff and make it work and they are no help at all. so I think I would be much better with purely open source solutions that I know I can make work and be very very very reliable. but hey if I did that no one would their slice of the pie and vendors would actually have to respond to their clients. |
