Any progress on dial-up access?

Ken, It was nice to read about this success story. I have a question on your overall project: Do you have any "standard" setup for those locales that are limited to dial-up access? Thanks. |

Find an external modem
Then see if your distro has wvdial

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wvdial It is easy to run from the command line. debian was always able to configure my external standard modem with no problems during an install. Other distros varied from release to release. |

I like the idea of using an external modem - do you know of anyone who has had success using a USB external modem with Linux? I'm afraid to just buy one and find out that it doesn't work because I don't have Windows on any of my PCs. |

I would be afraid that most USB modems were winmodems that relied on windows based drivers to work. most of the older serial port modems work perfectly well with Linux out of the box and require no configuration. here is an example of some that actually mention Linux in their supported OS: http://www.zoom.com/products/dial_up_external_serial.html definitely read the modem howto: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-2.html |
