... and yet a completely different POV on this

As self-proclaimed Net Geek Rick Moen writes regarding online social networks in his piece 'INOLJ-OOW2.0C (Is Not On LiveJournal Or Other Web 2.0 Cults)', http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Essays/winolj.html
Quoting:No, I'm really not interested in your Web-based "social network". And my data aren't going onto your Web-hosted "service".Then comes mention of Flickr in Moen's long A-Z section Quoting:On the app-server side...... ..... Fireant, Flickr, Flickrfotofinder, Flixya, ... ..... ..... all say they're rapturously eager to do me the great favour of storing my personal data for me, telling me all about the "convenience" of not having to do it myself.Well there, harumph, harumph! ... and who earnestly thinks that Moen and other like-minded OSS-advocates are so desperate for these browser plugins for their Digg and Twitter accounts as well, after reading this next section here ?? Quoting:The fact that you can host my data, and avert for me the headache of having to administer my own computers, profoundly fails to interest me. Yes, I know how AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript And XML) works. No, I don't want your dynamic-content RSS feed. And thank you, but I can "build my reputation" and "extend my sphere of associates" equally well — no, fundamentally better — on my own. Please keep your useless account; I don't want it.Agreed!! |

If you don't put your data up in "the Cloud" how can these companies mine it and sell it? How can it be stolen? C'mon! You're just being unmutual. "We want information... information." |

Oh yes, the mutual benefit is astounding! What's yours is theirs, and what's theirs is theirs. Such a deal! |

tc: That was the system in the Soviet Union and eastern Europe. The state and the ruling elite effective said what your is mine and what's mine is mine. I may now own a netbook (and yes, at first blush it's a very cool little box) but using the net doesn't mean I have to put my whole computing experience and my private data out there. Cloud computing is not for me. Sander: The correct response to that line is: "You won't get it." The Prisoner: Who's side are you on? No. 2: That would be telling. We want information... information. The Prisoner: You won't get it. No. 2: By hook or by crook we will. The Prisoner: Who are you? No. 2: The new number two. The Prisoner: Who is number one? No. 2: You are number six. The Prisoner: I am not a number. I am a free man. No. 2 laughs uproariously. The intro from The Prisoner is appropriate. Google, Novell, Microsoft, and all the other cloud proponents want information. If we say "you won't get it" I really feel their answer is pretty much "By hook or by crook we will." If you believe in individual liberties and haven't watched The Prisoner you really ought to find a copy you can borrow, rent, or even buy. It was the very first television miniseries. It was originally conceived as six one hour episodes by Patrick McGoohan (who also starred in the series) but ITV wanted a full season. They compromised and agreed on on 17 episodes. It first aired on the UK in 1967. In an exceedingly rare move for an American commercial network who almost never buy British programs, 16 episodes aired in prime time on CBS in 1968. BTW, if you already know The Prisoner well please excuse my rambling on. It's still probably the best TV series ever made, IMHO. |

Quoting:Sander: The correct response to that line is: "You won't get it." I'd figuge it would be a copy of "How to survive the zombie apocalypse" and a loaded shotgun :-) But in all seriousness, the way those social networks to to get everyones information does kinda resemble zombies. They're everywhere, come at you from all angles and they don't stop. It's annoying. Everytime I open up my e-mail theres yet another invite to yet another social networking fad. Especially Hyves is annoying as it is very popular here in The Netherlands. It's as prevalent here as e-mail is in the rest of the world. People "hyves" each other more than they e-mail each other. |

@caitlyn: "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered!" My all-time favorite quote... Alas, I am a prisoner of all my userids and passwords and other modern-day administrivia... |

I said, Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Hey! You! Get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd @H-feet You use more than one? How do you remember them? |

OTOH, how often have leet geeks said "what sally and sal sixpack need is a dumb client to a smart service?" Because they're not capable or interested in being their own system administrators, and just want some nice ez pointy-clickys, and someone else to be responsible for all the backend stuff. |

> How do you remember them? A program such as Password Gorilla (http://www.fpx.de/fp/Software/Gorilla/)or Secret Squirrel (http://secretsquirrel.sourceforge.net/). They store your passwords for you, and you only have to remember the one password. They work with both Windows and Linux. A Google search for password manager will turn up more than you want. |

tc: You're right but Sal and Sally may not understand how much of their personal info and freedom they are handing over. They will when it bites them you know where and by then it will be too late. |
