A Fact of Life: Third-party non-GPL software is necessary for a satisfactory end-user experience.

Some dont see that as a finger wagging complaint. Using the silly Asimovian zeroth law (the fourth of the three laws of robotics) system that the 'freedoms' are listed as. Freedom #4 should/would be, The rights of the individual being paramount, no application of the previous freedoms shall abridge the individual.

I don't mind if different distros do not include multimedia codecs and stuff. Just make it easy to add them, which in the last three years or so has gotten a lot easier. Mind you it was never really that hard in the first place I know, but for users coming from Windows where they have never had to think about it or someone new to Linux in general it can be a daunting task. I remember saying to myself, "what the heck are codecs and why can't I play jack on this thing?" I remember some of the 'fun' I had getting them installed and configuring the multimedia programs on the first couple of Fedora Core's and SuSE's I ran. Most of it was me being a newbie but if I had not had the overall interest in computers and Linux to drive me on, I probably would not have kept at it like I did.

It is that frustration, that new users to Linux feel sometimes that I can totally relate too. I know that more and more distros are including codecs on their live CD's but it is nice to have a distro or two like this to give to someone who is not computer savvy and not have to worry about trying to explain how to go and get the codecs to see and hear stuff.

This is precisely why I configure all my installs such that all this stuff is done, before I send the computer to the client. The class of computer user I've been doing this for simply are not interested in finding out about that sort of thing.

That's exactly what I do as well tracynne, my point was that it is nice to be able to just give them a disk and short of any hardware issues, it should 'just work'.

I use that stuff, sadly I do. Most "users" do. No toys, no users.

Anyone tried this PC/OS???????
