I thought it could be fun to take a look at JavaFX, but it turned out to be available for Windows and Mac only. So at the moment they have worse cross-platform compatibility than Flash, and even Silverlight (if the Moonlight beta can be counted - it just crashed Firefox for me, at each startup until I disabled it, so perhaps not). They are promising Linux support, though. |

A bit of googling took me to a page that had details on how to run JavaFX SDK on Linux/Solaris. I think the problem they are having right now on Linux and Solaris are to do with video and hardware graphics acceleration. "If you want to give it a go, download the zip version for Mac OS and unpack it. Then you'll need to set JAVAFX_HOME to point to the Java FX directory and add $JAVAFX_HOME/bin to your path.
