Thanks indeed, saved some time reading the article. |

These forum threads are spiraling into no content time wasters. I think it is time to instruct you all in the finer points of critical analysis. First to prove the level of this thread (and others) have sunk, here we have a nickel (five cents U.S.) being so frugal that s/he does not even deposit the two cents worth of opinion. Shame! Next, it's not quite a tie, just the differences are so marginal one is unlikely to notice. [Potential flame bait notice, i.e. positive mention of Ubuntu] However, all failed to put this set of results in context. When there was an article that focused on the degradation of performance in Ubuntu distributions from 7.04 to [8.04 || 8.10] there was a great deal of discussion of what a [fill in proper invective*] Ubuntu and everything Canonical was. But one question I noticed then was how Fedora compared precisely because it had the reputation for good performance. Notice we now have that answer, which might imply Fedora performance metric has been decaying faster than Ubuntu. But no one noticed. I can only conclude that the enemies of Ubuntu have concluded Ubuntu ==[=]** Linux. Therefore, all defenders of "Linux" are duty bound to defend Ubuntu***. [Note serious content in this message can be found in hard to discern physical space dimensions that are near the size of molecules, atoms or nuclei that are suspected to shroud the source of gravitation forces. Good hunting, or go stark raving mad. Either is fine with me, though I would prefer to learn what is behind gravity.] * Why all the fuss about profanity here and the hyper sensitivity exhibited towards it on these threads? I consider many things I have read and heard recently much more obscene than simple cuss words, despite their being written or said in a quasi cultivated manner and with the pretense of superior knowledge. Particularly blatant untruths, from official sources has much more lasting consequences upon the young. ** Whatever makes your code mean exactly equal. *** Until those noob users can see the light to use [insert your preferred distribution] that is objectively superior. |

How about benching Slackware vs. Ubuntu vs. Fedora? |

@Txt you wrote all that just to say the comparison was irrelevant. I said nothing up until now, because I believed the comparison was irrelevant. |

irrelevant to what? all data points are useful. |
penguinist Nov 29, 2008 6:28 PM EDT |
It's a comparison of linux against linux. One shouldn't expect a big performance difference between two packagings of the same 2.6.27 kernel. But the useful info here is that it is a tie. It's good to have that documented. The differences are in organization, not in performance. |

TC, Sorry you got it ... sorry can't say it here. How about wrong? It's a data point that could have been connected, but wasn't. If you were asserting the article content was essentially none to nil, we agree. However, after seven pages mostly of performance numbers more should have been done with it. Hz, Quoting:all data points are useful I beg to differ. In science most data is questionable if not wrong. Moreover, the vast areas with no measurement or model are breath taking. On the basis of my statement, you could argue I just agreed with you. |

As penguinist pointed out, the fact that it's a tie is in itself useful info. I have in the past seen benchmarks between distros which came out somewhat lopsided. As ta pointed out, one might reasonably expect it to be very close. But it's also helpful to find out that yes, the results were in line with our expectations. |

Personally I have found the benchmarks on phoronix often of limited value. They don't tailor their tests to the different systems they are testing. Seems to me that desktop tasks might be the place where you would see any significant (and relevant) difference between Ubuntu and Fedora. Give gnome and kde a full work out instead of kernel dependent utilities and games which are likely to be very similar since they depend on the kernel and graphics driver used.... Notice that they only significant difference they saw was between the 64bit and 32bit versions of each OS |

Quoting:though I would prefer to learn what is behind gravity Linux, but not Ubuntu. Really. What else is running the supercomputer-grid processing the terabytes of data coming from CERN looking for the Higgs-particle? So finally this thread became useful, because we answered one of the things many scientist couldn't answer for a long time: "What's behind gravity"? Please ring me when I need to collect something in Stockholm. |

hkw, I suggest taking the trip to Sweden in any case and forget about the Higgs particle. Enjoy the sites, appreciate the women. I never got to make the trip, even when it appeared likely. Luck played a big role and I was too closely associated with the losing party. The postulated Higgs particle is based on the Standard Model that is known to be flawed even by one of its creators. Whatever dark matter is - it probably is not included within that model. Hence, at best the Standard Model is incomplete. Also, do not forget the hint in the Fermi accelerator results that show the appearance of muons outside the collision path that are not explicable using the Standard Model of particle physics. FYI so that you do not over spend on flights and reservations. Anyway if you win, expect an all expenses paid trip. Send me some pictures to show me what I missed. |
