I think the difficulties described here is not a failing of JavaScript, but rather a failing of HTML/CSS. Such a simple thing should not require hacks to accomplish.

If the author thinks that using JavaScript is a sin, but used it anyway as a fix... then he might as well have gone ahead and committed another sin and used tables for that layout.

JS itself is actually rather decent, but it hampered by implementation quirks between browsers.
