The idea works! In spite of repeated shots to the foot the OLPC keeps limping forward.

Indeed it does. This is one issue where I think RMS is on the wrong track by boycotting it completely-- if he supported the non-Windows OLPC that would be a nice boost.

I agree Carla, I think it is safe to say that no one likes, condones or wanted Microsoft's involvement and influence on the OLPC. That said, RMS has always taken a "White or Black" stance on this kind of thing but life is full of shades of Grey. Yes, having Windows on OLPC's stinks but you can get them with Linux on them too. But that is still not "free" enough for RMS.

I have and will always respect why he feels the way he does, the FOSS movement would not have gotten the start it did without it. But to write off a project like this out of unwillingness is shortsighted.

In defense of "white and black" view-taking, we do sometimes need to be reminded that 80% gray is not white, nor is 15% gray black.

I'm with RMS on this one. Without the Open Source development model to kickstart the OLPC project, the XO wouldn't exist. Microsoft has turned OLPC into their own P/R tool, taking benefit from the hard work of GNU supporters whom they hate, and returning nothing. And they are doing it, with Negroponte's blessing. RMS probably feels like he was betrayed.

The children these are intended for should feel betrayed as well. The original premise was to give children a tool so they could learn how computers work, which is why OLPC turned down the offers from Apple and MS originally and went with the open OS, or so they said.

Now instead of a learning tool, they get a future zombie, that they can't learn anything from except how to use windows. Too bad they won't be able to run their AV software and their OS at the same time.
