[quote[Again, Acrobat 8 and Reader 8 are most relevant to users of Windows 98 or Me, Mac OS X 10.3 and earlier, or Linux (the 9.x versions of the Adobe software are not yet available for Linux). [/quote]

I guess someone forgot to tell this guy that both 9 and 10 have been released for Linux.

The article is correct. You are probably confusing Adobe reader with Adobe flash (9.x versions of former are available only for Windows/Mac).

Apparently, yes. The latest version of Acrobat Reader for Linux on their ftp site appears to be 8.1.3 (their website downloads of Reader are blocked by our firewall).

In the quote I quoted he states that the 9.x versions of the software are not available for Linux.

Though I did gloss over the reader part, I haven't used Adobe reader in a very long time, but I have to use Adobe flash because the open ones do work well with my bank yet.

Yeah. I never had to install it on any of my Linux boxes. The free pdf viewers work on pretty much everything. So not having Adobe Reader 9 isn't much of a loss.

I forget the exact numbers now, but it's interesting to compare the size of Adobe Reader with KPDF, XPDF or Ghostview. IIRC none of these are even close to a megabyte-sized binary, while Adobe Reader is this multi-megabyte behemoth with no more functionality than the OSS apps. Except phoning home to the mothership on the sneak.

I've heard that there's actually some functionality available from the Adobe version which isn't in the FOSS apps. If so, I've never needed it.

I had to fill out a form once, and it wouldn't work with any FOSS program. Only Acrobat worked.

The last time I had to use Adobe was for a form fill out as well, but the last time I had to the FOSS ones worked just great.

Though I am glad I don't have to do that very often.
