For all the GPL-positives Byfield's piece concludes with, there is still this ambivalent quote:
Quoting:While the defense showed no deep understanding of the GPL, it had the effect of moving the case out of the fast-track proceedings and into regular court. At that point, Maryanovsky, Rabinovitch, and their respective lawyers both stopped talking to the media, and a news blackout descended on the case for 18 months.
No doubt a personal matter in this case, yet one could still wonder what the effects were on these ex-Russians and the Israeli legal system from these "chess-game Alexanders'" ex-MotherCountry's recent pro-F/OSS decision ( see '*All* Russian Schools to Use Free Software', submitted courtesy of glynmoody at http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/110844 )

Other fairly recent pieces (besides Byfield's) that end up muddying the waters on Israel's GPL and F/OSS stance(s) are - 'Microsoft CEO, in Herzliya: Our company almost as Israeli as American', http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/985800.html and - 'First ALP Linux smartphone?', http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/110199

I fail to see what is ambivalent about (to paraphrase) "everyone shut up, so there was no news when the case was removed from fast track". Fairly clear it seems to me, and of no bearing positive or negative on the article itself, a statement of fact.

@vv FWIW, a good old-time coder I've met from a former USSR-state (not sure which country) mentions that the Israeli legal system is a little messed, though not as badly by far as the Russian legal system. Maybe just his opinion. I'm also a little confused after reading this and hearing this person sound out, whether Middle Eastern countries like Israel are really pro-F/OSS or anti-F/OSS? And related to this, I myself was wondering how much negatives/FUD current pro-GPL companies in the Middle East have to bear from the M$ Redmonder$ --- both legal _and_ monetary --- based upon links like the hareetz.com one? So sorry azertooth ;) 2c
