Quoting:And while developers are often annoyed over Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) restrictions for iPhone applications, having fewer apps to choose from is better for consumers.

Gotta love the old "Choice is bad! Only a few select manufacturer approved applications good!" argument.

Computer Software would have to be the only area of human endeavour that I have anything to do with on a consistent basis where it is assumed that choice is bad.

Try going to a super market and not being confronted with choice.

True story from the summer of 1993:

A Russian woman, in the USA on exchange through the Girl Scouts, was working as a camp counselor. One day, they sent her to the store to pick up some vegetables.

Two hours later, she hadn't returned. Worried that she might be lost, someone went towards the store, keeping eyes open for her.

Well, she was still at the store, and had nothing in her shopping cart. She was so overwhelmed with the options in front of her that she couldn't make up her mind.

So Apple is targeting the overwhelmed Russian visitor demographic?

The way I understand it, is that we Americans like to have choice in our purchases for everything but computer software (excluding games that is). People would throw a fit if their choice of soda or ice cream flavors were limited. But when you try to give them a choice of more than 1 or 2 applications to accomplish a task, unless it's to take up time by blowing things up or something, the world is coming to an end. What would people do if there was only 2 TV stations to watch?

They'd get off their duffs and get a lot more done. They'd start fixing things rather than letting them rot on the assumption they could buy a replacement.

gus3, you're too optimistic. They'd still sit there clicking back and forth between the two channels and complaining how there is nothing to watch.

Until the S.O. got sick of it and told him/her to go do something.

People want choice in things that they (perceive to) understand.

If they don't understand it, then they just want to be told what to do/buy.
