I wouldn't mind, but my upload speed is always faster than my download speed, and I always seem to be uploading way more data than I'm getting down. 7 days to go.

It suddenly sped up, I'm now getting maximum download speed and maximum upload speed. It now says 4 days, but at maximum download speed It shouldn't take more than an hour. It must have heard me complaining.

No, but bittorrent isn't really suitable for distribution of Linux iso's or updates. Bittorrent is tit-for-tat. The more you upload, the faster your download becomes. It's great for people who share much. It's not really good for Linux installs and updates because we tend to download much more than is uploaded. Expecially since usual broadband is asynchronous (more down than up).

I can see the reason why Linux distros like bittorrent though. I just hope that someone comes up with a peer-to-peer network similar to bittorrent aimed specifically at Linux distro distribution and updates.

In order to make bit torrent work for downloading distributions, the distributors need to seed the mirrors with full files, that way there would be lots of sources and any additional sources - people downloading via bit torrent - would be a bonus.

I'm in the middle of upgrading Mandriva 2008.1 to 2009.0.

I started the upgrade last night, and this morning my machine wouldn't boot into a Graphical desktop. I upgraded KDM in the console and rebooted and ran startx and got a full GUI desktop. I was prompted to update the packagemanager, which I di, and got a new Upgrade window, they may have fixed a problem with the upgrader, here's hoping. Then I got a new upgrade message, so here I am upgrading. We''l see how it goes when I get home for lunch.

I upgraded on Thursday, I had to run through several times as it kept losing connection with the upgrade servers. At one point I also lost my GUI (thinking that a reboot would help in the middle of it all...it didn't), but I pushed through and eventually upgrade 2200+ packages and now run KDE 3.5.10 (tried 4, like it, but am sticking with 3.x for now). Great distro, I am going to upgrade my lady's PC and her nephew's (her from PCLOS 2007, which is getting quite stale, and his from Ubuntu 6.10, which was stale when it came out, LOL).

I've never had much luck using torrents for ISO downloads either. Sloooooow. Reminds me of the olden days when the installation instructions for Debian recommended using rsync. Like what the heck- that's no good for a fresh download, you don't gain anything but experience using rsync in the Debian download team's custom super-convoluted way.

I now don't have a computer. The upgrade was a total failure. It won't eeven boot into safe mode.

Sounds like their attempts to make Windows refugees to feel comfortable have gone a bit too far! ;)

I reckon.

I had to reinstall, so I'm back to the beginning of 2008.1. I had to reinstall for one of my ladies, the whole upgrade turned to sh1te for her, too (she was in a tolat panic, as she thought she had done something wrong) and I have to fix it for an elderly gentleman as well. I rang around all my other people and told them not to up grade.

One lady told me she had and it worked just fine for her, the only problem she said she had was that the Mandriva web site replaced her home page on the browser.

I have upgraded on two PCs with no problems, although clearly that doesn't help your situation. Not rubbing it in, just informing. Is there anything "odd" about your hardware?

It's not just my hardware. But No.

Both upgrades did keep failing, timing out on update servers. I would push through again and pick up where I left off, after 3-4 times I was done. I'll be interested in knowing what the issue was. I think perhaps Mandriva pushed through before it was ready just to make it on time. How Ubuntu of them.

This sounds like a "back up your data and do a clean install" release. :(

For what it's worth, I didn't use the Upgrade feature of the Mandriva package manager, I changed the repos via EasyUrpmi and instigated the changes manually. That might be the difference.

@rijel That's worth a try.

The real problem is not what you or I can do about it, it's where all those ordinary technology unsophisticated users are left when it fails, and when it fails it fails massively.

One of my ladies did the upgrade and it worked fine. The problem exists for those who do it and it fails. They really are left high and dry by something looks like it's pretty flakey.
