Why is it assumed that the next president has to be Republican or Democrat? Because it is ass_u_me_d. Rather, look at all the candidates and see if there is someone you can actually support, rather than just the least objectionable. So long as it is only the "lesser of two evils", we will continue to suffer under evil. |

I, for one, am not willing to throw away my vote on a fringe candidate. Besides, all the ones I've read about or heard speak (Barr, Nader, etc...) are worse than the major parties. The more I learn about Obama, study his records and his positions, and listen to him speak on issues the more I am convinced he will make a decent President. He certainly isn't evil. McCain is another matter... |

OK, the urge to toss the TOS and take part in this conversation pointing out all the failings from every party or just agree with Bob, that the lesser of two evils, is still tolerating an evil. |

I know some are thinking, "Did Scott post this as bait?" No, but I did think about it for a while before posting it. I did post it because it stuck to the subject of comparing the two candidates views on FOSS related issues. The author did not use their different stances to promote either of their political agendas or to vilify one or the other. Obviously he expressed is opinions in regards to what their stances mean in relation to FOSS but he did not use it as a platform to spout political spin. That is why I posted it. If we can keep the conversation to the subject of what each candidate's stance means for FOSS then everything will be fine. It is a fine line but it can be done. Now the whole "evil" thing has to come to an end though. If we take the meaning of evil literally, then discussing whether someone is evil or not is not really even a political one is it not? If we can stick to the subject of what their individual stances mean for FOSS, and not as evidence for being evil and not as ammunition for slamming or praising them, well to be honest, it will be a first..lol!! To express my own opinion, I think that after looking at what they both say in regards to FOSS, I feel that there is a gaping whole in their knowledge of it. Their stances show how much they don't understand or are ignorant of. Whether they are intentionally ignorant and/or having 'sold out' are told what to say is a whole other conversation. I think it is going to be some time before we see a presidential candidate that is 'tech savvy' in that way; someone who loves computers and cares about the technology around them like we do. |

I have found that the best way to promote FOSS/Linux is to make sure that when you check your laptop case for all necessary stuff: disks, thumb drives, spare battery, patience....you also make sure that you extract and leave at home your personal political beliefs. We have a hard enough road ahead of us without throwing up our own obstacles...as divisive as political issues are at this time in this nation, airing your views stands a great chance of screwing things up. Some folks however, can't do this...that's fine...there are other ways to help aside from face to face advocacy. You wouldn't believe the email I've gotten after the playful film clip illustrating Larry Cafiero's political stances compared to mine. It was simply meant to show that political differences are not greater than a common goal. Some of the email was rather pointed. Some of it was hateful. Silence is often the best choice when the truth will cause harm. Lessons learned late are not necessarily lessons not learned. h |

h, I was once told that a man who wont stand for what he believes in, believes in nothing. It's one of the reasons you have earned my respect. |

> ,,,you also make sure that you extract and leave at home your personal political beliefs. Of course, you're doing so does not ensure that anyone else will do the same. There are people for whom politics outweighs all else. :( While it may not seem so at all times, I'm not in that category. :) Though I agree with Bob: vote your conscience, regardless of where it leads you. And no, I don't think either of the two candidates of the primary parties is evil. I can't say the same about one of the losers, but fortunately, that's now beside the point. |

The 2008 Democratic National Convention web site used Silverlight for which there is an open-source replacement in the form of Moonlight. Unfortunately Moonlight didn't support the required features so it didn't work. I highlighted their web design here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Democratic_National_Conven... The 2008 Republican National Convention web site used Adobe Flash and their closed-source player worked on LInux. I didn't try Gnash so I don't know if it worked or not. On the 2008 DNC Wikipedia discussion page someone seemed to indicate that it wouldn't. Lets not forget who signed the DMCA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Ac... |

Generic political joke: The Post Turtle While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to [insert name] and his/her bid to be a heartbeat away from being [insert office] The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, [name] is a post turtle.' Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was. The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.' The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put her up there to begin with.' |
