After a bit to much verbiage on Microsoft's evil intent and refusal to really drink the Kool-Aid, Bruce finally gets to the reality: Microsoft is dazed and confused after getting its butt kicked. Sure they lash out. This is a company that's used to getting its way. This is a company that stood on top of the heap and danced little jigs on the heads of competitors, customers, and the law. They are not well-versed in the art of getting along and doing business as just another vendor. But the truth is, giant revenue notwithstanding, their world has collapsed. Their OS strategy ran into a brick wall and bounced backward. By now, they fully expected to extend their desktop monopoly to the server room. It hasn't happened. Free software in the form of Linux (and FreeBSD and OpenBSD) and Apache and MySQL obliterated their biggest selling point : Hey!!! We're cheap! We're cheap! We're cheap! Commodity boxes! Use your existing desktop skill set!! We're cheap!! Unreliable and insecure software dented their credibility. Vista -- well, Vista is just an embarrassment. I think they've figured out that free software is here to stay. They can try to slow it down. They can try to influence it. They have to get along with it. If only they knew how. Getting a little desperate. The dental bills will be awfully high if they don't figure it out before their teeth are ground all the way down. |

Quoting:If only they knew how. IMHO MS believes it found a way. See my thread here: http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/27615/ MS isn't fighting FOSS. It's reduced to fighting just Linux. |
