This will increase the use of SSL and VPNs. The ISPs will then be able to claim ignorance.

The ISPs want legal protection as "common carriers", as in "We just shovel bits, we don't dictate what's in 'em".

But politicians want to be seen to be "doing something" for their constutants, specifically those who make big campaign contributions like record labels and movie studios.

The only people who end up being victims are we "users", who pay for ISP service, pay taxes, pay for movies and pay for music, and are then up against the wall when the rent-seekers want blood.

Wait a minute... If I send an illegal copy of a music CD (CD-R) to you, do they want to sue US Postal (or what's it called over there)?

You know...some of these people, especially the actual artists might be careful what they wish for. Long ago, I took a proud part in something called FLITA.

F.L.I.T.A.

Now it is a crude acronym ten points past nasty so I can't even come close to telling you specifically what it means but if you recall, the most vocal member of Metallica was Lars.

Note the second letter in said acronym. With me so far? Someone wished terrible things on Lars. I would perceive it as terrible anyway...I don't know Lars or his orientation personally.

Now that most of the story can be told, an extremely wealthy person in south africa started flita. It boiled down to this guy paying people to burn and by postal service, distributing free entire album sets of Metallica music. There were several sites that would pop up then disappear, telling people how to get their free Metallica album sets. I specifically remember in the end, there were over 300.000 disks sent with at least 4 albums on each set. I may or may not have had some dealings with one of those "networks" and several "network admins" openly contacted the RIAA and taunted them...of course Lars was personally notified.

it was shortly after that, Lars shut his big mouth.

Sometimes it just behooves one to let things be...they can always be worse.

FLITA, yes indeed. When multi-millionaires complain about their lost money, you really just want them to take a FFAARD. In traffic.

"Ten points past nasty."

A new phrase for my verbal arsenal.

A new phrase for my verbal arsenal.

I am flattered gus. Use it with immunity and creative punctuation.

Yeah, I recall. A two bit band who's best song was a poor remake of a Bob Seger classic. And they're worried about someone "stealing" their music. They should wish.
