The SOHO edition is packed with goodness. I'm a bigger fan of their light and standard edition, preferring lighter desktops like XFCE, fluxbox or JWM, but Vector SOHO is sweet.

Like the old Libranet debian based distro, SOHO is a commercial product that vector sells. But they have free versions (that to me are even better for their lightness).

I urge everyone with the time or space to give a vector a spin. If you have wanted t try a slack based distro, but have hesitated, try a free version of Vector. http://vector2.ecosq.com/downloads

If you run a business, this could be the distro you've been looking for

And, unlike certain Slackware derivatives we could mention (but won't), the source code seems to readily available:

Zenwalk (had to mention it) is supposed to be putting out the source code now.

From here: http://support.zenwalk.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16850

Quoting: Source repository : many faithful users asked us to provide an online source repository rather than sending source Dvds on-demand. So we have been working on a mechanism to allow the development team to instantly publish source tarballs for any new package we release. This source repository is now 100% ready for ISO packages, and the contributed packages (aka "extra") source repository is being populated actively.

True? You decide.

See. I try to be nice, and someone else spoils it. :)

I'll give them the benefit of a doubt as to their intent, but I'll also believe the results when I see them.

I've got Slackware on my main PC and Zen 5.1 on my old P III 550 MHz machine (that I'm typing on right now) and on my laptop that's semi-permanently on loan to my sister. She's a Mac fan and she likes Zenwalk's Mac like style and ease of use. But I won't upgrade to 5.2 unless the source becomes available.

Now the question is, what machine to try Vector on?

Set up a virtual machine (either with VirtualBox or VMware Server, both free downloads) on your main PC and install Vector on it. Virtual machines are great for testing out distros.

Hmm. Seems to be reasonably complete and current. There appear to be two version, an i486 version and a regular version. It looks like my scepticism may have been unwarranted. I don't believe it was there during our last discussion, so somebody's been hard at work. Good for them. I suppose their discussions with the FSF must have convinced them.

Your skepticism was warranted, don't worry. It's quite nice to see them releasing the source, Zenwalk is a fabulous distro.

Well, it starts from a good base. :)

@jdixon

Yeah, it came after somebody complained (wonder who that was?????). Anyway, the lead developer came to this forum and was quite level-headed about it all despite the sharp opinions going back and forth. I have been looking at the GPL faqs on the FSF website more myself. I'll start reading the actual license soon enough.
