NVidia doesn't need to open their drivers- that's probably a big ugly jumble of licensed this and patented that and all under Sooper Sekrit NDA anyway. So why not just release specs and let FOSS devs do the rest? Then everyone is happy- Linux users get nice open-source 3D and other fun stuff, NVidia gets to use all that good code just like everyone else, and the poor devs who are ruining their health reverse-engineering can move on to something less dastardly and more fun.

I believe helios himself visited nvidia at one time (the physical building) and they told him under no uncertain terms would they release anything....

It is probably due mostly to patent issues.

Which reminds me, I found a picture of Ken, so now we can attach a face to the intrepid writer and tilter-at-windmills: http://digitalart.org/images/artwork/0056500-56873/cartoons-...

Geez, some people are so paranoid. If you don't want other people to look at stuff, don't freaking put it on a public Web page. Growl. Here's another one: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/20/Don_Quijo...

helios went to nVidia? Wow! So did I!

In fact, my office was literally a five-minute walk away. Or two minutes if I jay-walked, but that wasn't advisable there.
