That actually doesn't bother me as much as an earlier one, from which I'll quote the blurb:

> In around 15 minutes, the time it takes to install Ubuntu Server Edition, you can have a LAMP (Linux,Apache, > MySQL and PHP) server up and ready to go. This feature, exclusive to Ubuntu Server Edition, is available at the > time of installation.

Exclusive to Ubuntu Server Edition. Yeah, no other distribution has ever included a LAMP stack. Sheesh,

Well sure, any major distro includes the makings of a lamp stack, but ubuntu has an "easy button".

The ubuntu server install is very austere, but IIRC there is a prominently featured checkbox item that says "build lamp server" or something along those lines.

Hey, if it makes the new linux users happy, go for it.

There are lots of prefab LAMP stacks, and pooey on sites that break up a single article into eleventeen slow-loading pages.

I'm writing a 'run a business on linux' series right now, and it's based on Ubuntu Server, mainly because it's The Hot Linux, and tasksel has some nice package groups such as the LAMP stack. It appears that Ubuntu is going for a unified installer that lets you install any Ubuntu version from the same installation. This is the current selection:

$ tasksel --list i dns-server DNS server u edubuntu-server Edubuntu server u lamp-server LAMP server u mail-server Mail server i openssh-server OpenSSH server u postgresql-server PostgreSQL database i print-server Print server i samba-server Samba File server u ubuntustudio-graphics 2D/3D creation and editing suite u ubuntustudio-audio Audio creation and editing suite u edubuntu-desktop-kde Edubuntu KDE desktop u edubuntu-desktop Edubuntu desktop u gobuntu-desktop Gobuntu desktop u kubuntu-desktop Kubuntu desktop u ubuntustudio-audio-plugins LADSPA and DSSI audio plugins u mythbuntu-desktop Mythbuntu additional roles u ubuntustudio-desktop Ubuntu Studio desktop u ubuntu-desktop Ubuntu desktop u ubuntustudio-video Video creation and editing suite u xubuntu-desktop Xubuntu desktop u edubuntu-live Edubuntu live CD u gobuntu-live Gobuntu live CD u kubuntu-live Kubuntu live CD u ubuntu-live Ubuntu live CD u xubuntu-live Xubuntu live CD

I just get whiny when people treat Ubuntu like it is Linux God and nobody else has ever done anything worthwhile :)

Tasksel comes from Debian. We have a "LAMP stack" button as well. It's not Ubuntu-specific.

I looked at my Sid box first, and it doesn't have a LAMP option in tasksel:

u desktop Desktop environment u web-server Web server u print-server Print server u dns-server DNS server u file-server File server u mail-server Mail server u database-server SQL database i laptop Laptop u manual manual package selection

The web-server task has these packages:

$ tasksel --task-packages web-server libapache2-mod-python apache2-doc libapache2-mod-php5 libapache2-mod-perl2 apache2-mpm-prefork analog

That's no LAMP stack. Ubuntu throws in a pretty complete MySQL-based bundle:

apache2 mysql-client-5.0 libapache2-mod-php5 apache2.2-common apache2-utils php5-common libaprutil1 php5-mysql libmysqlclient15off libdbi-perl mysql-server libplrpc-perl mysql-server-5.0 libdbd-mysql-perl libnet-daemon-perl libapr1 libxml2 libpcre3 libpq5 apache2-mpm-prefork mysql-common

Interesting, Ubuntu has a special button for that.
