Quoting:BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - April 16, 2008) - "Open Source software is raising havoc throughout the software market. It is the ultimate in disruptive technology, and while to it is only 6% of estimated trillion dollars IT budgeted annually, it represents a real loss of $60 billion in annual revenues to software companies," said Jim Johnson, Chairman, The Standish Group International, Boston, MA http://www.standishgroup.com.
http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release.do?id=844462 |

Interesting statement that. And probably true-ish... but how can one really measure that accurately? To me that's $60bil worth of companies who dumped their proprietary software for open source software. Could possibly a cost-based decision, or perhaps because they needed software they could freely customise to suit their own needs. Either way, these are people who deemed the open source solution the better one. There might be an equal amount of companies dumping one proprietary solution for another proprietary solution. But I doubt they really care to metnion that. I don't really like this "us vs. them(tm)" attitude. It's like these companies losing revenue need something to blame for their product offering not being attractive enough to retain customers. |
