Even the mainstream suppliers are offering killer deals. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=0... (Not sure if this link works outside my own browser.)

However, I really wish DELL would offer "None" as one of the OS choices.

Edit: Come to think of it, the likely reason they won't is that they would lose all that crapware money.

This one is even better:

Yeah, the $529 price isn't that impressive; until you realize that it includes a 19" wide screen flat panel monitor. Without the monitor, it's $339. Then when you consider that it comes with Ubuntu and not Windows...

I agree that Ubuntu is better than Windows.

However, the unit I specified above is only $349 and the 19" widescreen flat panel is included.

OK, I didn't see that it included the 19" monitor. The Vostro prices normally don't. The Vostro is the better deal then. I stand corrected.

Make a few little additions, and it's a pretty good server for a small office:

PROCESSOR Intel® Core™2 Duo Proc E6550 (2.33GHz,4MB L2Cache,1333FSB) OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition (wiping this out, of course) PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE No Pre-installed Productivity Software MONITOR Dell 19 inch Widescreen E198WFP Analog Flat Panel Monitor MEMORY 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz - 2DIMMs OPTICAL DRIVE Single Drive: 16X DVD+/-RW Drive HARD DRIVE 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™ SECONDARY HARD DRIVE 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™ VIDEO CARD Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 FLOPPY OR MEDIA READER 3.5 Floppy Drive MODEM & WIRELESS No Modem Option SOUND Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio WARRANTY & SERVICE 3 Year Basic Limited Warranty and 3 Year NBD On-Site Service

All for $868. Throw in a cheap backup of some type and that's all the horsepower most businesses need, and it'll hum along nicely with Red Hat or Debian on it, you'll forget the thing is even there. The firm I work for sells our people SBS (I think it stands for Surely Bull****), and it's just overkill for most clients. Why in the name of all that is holy do 5 people need Active Directory? :-/ It makes no sense.

Get it with Vista Home Basic, and it's even cheaper.

Because MS says so! Don't you know that using Active Directory will increase their productivity 500%?!

Kinda like Exchange...I remember a very small client not being able to send emails to the person in the next cubicle (some goofy Exchange process was screwed up) and they acted like it was a giant show stopper.

We said we'd get it fixed, but in the meantime lean over and tell them what you want! If you were comfortable doing that in the first place you coulda saved a few grand. LOL
