This should be called "Duel of the Parasites!" It's just a big circle-you-know-what of useless leeches propping each other up: Microsoft, as vendor of the most expensive, most shoddy, least secure software ever; the various 'security' software vendors whose livelihoods depend on Windows; and a bloated hardware industry that lives and dies by ever-escalating demands of both for more powerful computers just to have enough horsepower to get out of their own way.

Maybe Barracuda will do us a good turn. I'm not familiar with the company; however, I have heaped scorn on Trend Micro, Symantec, and others for their coziness with corporate malware: http://www.enterprisenetworkingplanet.com/netsecur/article.p...

A surprisingly acute similarity in the players of this case to that of Microsoft, SCO and BayStar in the disparagingly infamous SCO vs. Novell case. http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS7929912840.html http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-5450515.html

Darn, I saw the comment subject and thought, "politicians!"

Actually, I've used and appreciate Trend Micro's Housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for those times when I want to show a Windows luser just how infected their machine is.

But really, a patent on where you put your virus scanner? I am reminded again of all the good reasons for throwing out the Patent system because it is a hindrance to innovation.

This is like patenting eye glasses for the purpose of watching TV instead of reading a book.

vainrveenr, there could be a connection, though it may be nothing more than an established ecosystem of incompetence and corruption. Imagine having a business model that requires incompetence- I guess that's a kind of innovation. Nothing surprises me anymore, except the gutlessness of Trend and Symantec for caving in to such an obviously bogus patent in the first place.
