All I can say is Wow! I have a much better understanding of where helios is coming from now. Thank you for this well done article/interview. It was extremely enlightening for me. |

He is a true Iconoclast. |

Your right Colonel, unfortunately he has been beset by the same kinds of problems that other Iconoclasts have dealt with throughout history as well. In College I wrote a term paper entitled "The evolution of Iconoclasm into Iconolatry". In getting it approved, it took me three meetings with my professor to get her to understand what it was that I was going to write about and then it took her a week to decide on it. |

Scott, I just assumed you were an IT kinda guy. That paper doesn't sound like you were in the right class. |

I have always had a love of History and aced any class I've taken in it, have done just as well in English. I know I have enough credits for two year degrees in History, Anthropology and Earth Science, but who wants those.. ;-) edit: My Mother bought the Encyclopedia Britannica the year I was born. By the time I was ten I had read most of it, with her. If I could have those books back somehow.. |

I don't remember learning to read. And I did read encyclopedias for fun before I even got to middle school. I think I've found a kindred spirit in Scott. |

I didn't read encyclopedias as a kid but reading Wikipedia is my favourite pastime now ;) |

I can sympathize with you guys concerning encyclopedias. We didn't have a TV growing up, so I had to do something for "fun" and reading the encyclopedia was it. I even learned the sign language alphabet doing that. |

I feel blessed that I read it with my Mom, I cannot remember not knowing how to read, not knowing more about history or English or a bunch of things than most of those I grew up around.Quoting:I even learned the sign language alphabet doing that. I did that too!! But I have forgot most of it now.. |

Great interview, Scott! Thanks for posting it. I had found my way to the blog of helios a few times in the past, usually from links in Linux Today Newsletter, which is also how I found your story. Your interview really brings out the man behind the blog, and he seems to be doing very admirable work. I really don't understand the few people who've tried to pick fights with him. Sadly, there are plenty of deranged people out there. They probably didn't have the benefit of encyclopedias in their formative years. |
