I decided to download the openSuSE distro with KDE4 Beta 4 , just to give KDE4 a spin, unfortunately openSuSE refused to recognise my 1440 by 900 Acer LCD monitor, and kept trying give me 1280 by 1050, which put some parts of the desktop off the screen.

openSuSE is the only distro, I've tried recently that refused to recognise the monitor, even Ubuntu had no trouble.

Likewise, Mandriva 2008 set up the 1440 by 900 display just fine on my desktop systems, but I also had to manually get it right with OpenSuse 10..3

I think that's a problem with the new X server, not really distro specific. Having said that, I run opensuse 10.3 and am quite happy with the graphics on intel and nvidia equipped systems.

As far as i can tell the graphics on the openSuSE distro are fine. It was it's inability to recognise the wide screen monitor. Other live CD versions it've tried Mandriva One, Ubuntu 7.10 for example had no trouble configuring for the monitor. I'll probably try the Knoppix live CD so I can have a good look at KDE4.
