> These are nice guys doing a good job. I agree. Unfortunately, they're not serving my segment of the market. :( I prefer AMD processors and $500 is my top end price for a machine, not my low end. :( The new machine I just got back at the end of May cost $350, including shipping. The only thing they offer that would be of interest to me is the gOS machine. I may get one of those eventually, finances permitting. They should look at carrying the new Asus laptop too. It has similar appeal, though it will have to drop at least $100 before I'm in the market for one. |

jdixon> I prefer AMD processors and $500 is my top end price for a machine, not my low end. Same here, jdixon - since AMD practically invented the modern 64 bit processor (derived from the Alphas AFAIK), they are also my preferred animals, plus they're a lot cheaper. The only other Linux-friendly vendor in the US I know of (and Cathy Malmrose also mentioned them in http://allaboutubuntu.wordpress.com/2007/06/26/zareasons-ceo...) are System 76, and they have an interesting Asus barebone, tho only with Intel chips at http://system76.com/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=54 - here in Germany, you can buy naked AMD versions of those as well - see for instance http://www.alternate.de/html/shop/productListing4C.html?cat1... Definitely the point where I would start looking for cheap and reliable machines. My former boss and a coworker bought these, and they are happy with them. cheers, wjl |

I don't think the VIA C7 processor in the Everex is anywhere near as good as an AMD. And now you can put together an AMD dual-core box for the same $$$. The key will be the Linux-powered Everex laptop. If they can roll that out for $299, it'll be huge. I'm running Debian and Ubuntu on a 1.3 GHz Celeron M laptop with 256 MB RAM, and I'm pretty happy these days. |
