I have been working on an image of Linux that "just works" so most women can do what they want to do. You can discuss this at http://olylug.org/ if you want.

That's a temporary nickname and a joke. I thought that was obvious. Six messages in protest so far? What is really wrong?

It wasn't obvious to me, as I couldn't find the article referenced in the link. But my post wasn't about the original posting, it was in response to Carla's.

whats really wrong? 1: The title to your thread "Panty Linux" 2: Your assumption in your post that women can not do what they want in Linux any differently than men.

Quoting: I have been working on an image ...

of being an insensitive sexist pig. It was not obvious at all that it was a joke, it was obvious however from the post following that it was offensive. If as you say it was a joke, it's time for you to grasp the concept that that kind of humor has absolutely no place in polite society to begin with.

What's obvious is that you have no clue. Something like Ladies' Linux (or even Little Ladies' Linux, though that would be in considerably less taste) might have been considered a joke. This wasn't.

I suspect that your "joke" was neither subtle nor nuanced in such a way that anyone would see the funny side of it, but as i haven't seen it, i can't really say. It seems the joke is on you.

"Panty Linux" is your idea of a joke? I hope you've figured out by now that it's not funny. Your link did not lead to any particular information, but to a forum full of different topics. So what is the point of your post?

I'll even take some time to explain a little, on the chance that you're serious but merely misguided.

Anytime you want to get a particular group of people interested in a project you're working on, insulting them is not a good way to do that. "It's just a joke" doesn't work. "I am sorry" does. Women in tech (and women in general) hear this kind of stupid "humor" all the time. It's not funny, it's not new, it's not respectful. Most of the time it is not intended to be funny, but is motivated by malice. It's designed to belittle and dismiss, and to show that women are not taken seriously.

If you can be honest with yourself, ask yourself why you would choose such a name in the first place? Why is the first thing that comes to your mind after 'women' 'panty'? When you consider addressing a male audience, do you think 'jockstrap' or 'Calvins'? Or maybe 'tidy whities'. It's hard to take something that sounds like porn as being worthy of serious investigation.

You still haven't given a link to any information about this panty Linux. What makes it special to women? Are there any women actually working on it? Why would women want to use it, if they get past the name? 'Panty Linux' does not say to me 'possibly cool Linux thingy that I must check out.' It says to me 'annoying people live here, move along.'

Humor is tricky and can easily backfire, as any business coach or public speaking teacher will tell you. It doesn't matter what you find funny- what matters is what your target audience thinks.

Hey Chuck you have inspired me with your biting and uplifting "wit".

I am releasing a new image called Clod Linux a distro that besides constantly spitting out really "humorous" and belittling "error" messages and rtfms, is so easy to use even a CaveMAN could do it.

Why not change the 'n' to an 'r' and call it:

Party Linux

You know, Free as in 'beer'.

I think it would be good marketing to the college crowd as well as sports fans.

Picture a hot day in Wrigley with the vendors walking up and down the stands yelling

"Distro! Distro! Get your red hot Distro!"

As long as it's not Red Hat Distro. We can't be infringing on trademarks. :)

And since the Linux mascot is a penguin maybe it should be 'Get your icy cold distro!'

It would work better with the free beer thing too.
