Given that ANSI C has existed in a codified state since 1989, I'd hazard that no new Unix apps have been written since then, but what do I know? Only that my Kalah game, written on a 3b2 in 1988-89 under SysV can still compile and run on Linux 2.6.23.1 today, as can a checkers game I wrote under NeXTStep in 1991-92. Gee whiz, Mr Gartner, have you ever actually written a program for Linux or Unix or Solaris? Ever? Have you paid attention to portability issues? Cripes, I used to try to compile and test my C programs under NetBSD, Solaris (32 and 64 bit modes on SPARC) and HP-UX on their crazy PA-RISC hardware just to try to work out any pointer size assumptions or endianness kinks. It took a little work, but it wasn't THAT hard. Same as doing byacc vs bison today. I have to conclude that Mr Gartner hasn't written a new analysis since 1987 or so, and has been COASTING ever since, slightly re-writing old analyses written when Gartner actually employed people who looked at the problem. Or, since that Golden Age may never have actually occurred, they just MAKE THINGS UP. |

Well said. I wish Gartner would fold its tent and go away. No loss except a lot of hot air. |
