"As part of the agreement, Dell will purchase SUSE Linux* Enterprise Server certificates from Microsoft and establish a services and marketing program to migrate existing Linux users who are not Dell Linux customers to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server." microsoft is dying - this goes to show how scared they are. - so what if nobody buys them - then dell is stuck with these from microsoft. novell was nice enough to let us in on this linux thing so can you please buy novell licenses from us instead of novell so we can get some money. if not we will sue everybody because everyone is stealing our ip wahhh!. just my take - vista is a disaster and they are looking to survive. I just hope corporations realize how much a disaster vista is before they take the plunge wasting time and money and try to deploy it. now I just hope someone shuts balmer up before the sewage spews from his mouth. don't let this change your buying from dell - they still are paying microsoft whether this deal happened or not. I will still recommend them to newbies to buy from and get linux. if you like novell too go buy novell - I personally don't like suse anymore because I think they made a disaster out of suse linux because of the update manager. that is really the major thing they changed in it and it doesn't even work - what has novell done innovation wise beside buy technology - they are just like microsoft they buy their innovation and are a dying dinosaur IMO. But use novell if you like it. we will still hear from microsoft cry like babies until they are dead and gone. |

Wouldn't it be hilarious if MS were using this deal as a first step in trying to move over to selling Linux instead of Windows? |
jimf May 07, 2007 8:19 AM EDT |
Selling Linux is going to make them good corporate citizens??? Considering that MS is the evil entity here, and, Windows only the inferior product.... I don't see much that's funny with that at all. |
dcparris May 07, 2007 8:41 AM EDT |
I didn't say anything about them becoming good corporate citizens. I'm being facetious (or maybe fecetious). |
jimf May 07, 2007 8:45 AM EDT |
The thought of a MS 'Distro', even if it was on the up and up, just seems so... 'dirty'... ;-) |
tuxchick May 07, 2007 8:54 AM EDT |
oo don, you just made the killer pun of all time :D |
SFN May 07, 2007 8:58 AM EDT |
I think it would be great to see Microsoft put out their own distro. Maybe once they fail at doing something that individuals have been able to do for quite a while now, people will start to get it. |
dcparris May 07, 2007 9:56 AM EDT |
TC: Nice to know you got it! SFN: I have long argued that MS would do well to follow in Apple's footsteps. |
tuxchick May 07, 2007 10:36 AM EDT |
OMG I agree with the Rev. *faints* MS should embrace GPL and other FOSS software, even to the point of releasing their own FOSS-based operating system. Their intransigence on the subject, as I love to repeat, is akin to mental illness. My biggest fear with the Novell deal was that they were legitimizing MS' claims of Linux infringing their sacred eye pee; that is, patent violations. That's a pretty dubious strategy, especially in light of the recent Supreme Court decision that makes it easier to challenge stupid patents. Which are like what, 98% of them? Their real strategy is plain ole protection racket- scaring companies into paying for Microsoft-approved Linuxes so they are "protected" from "infringing", and MS gets a piece of the action. Same stuff, different day. |

Quoting:The thought of a MS 'Distro', (...) Hmmm, somebody once said of Microsoft's naming conventions that if MS sold toilet paper, it would be branded as "Microsoft Ass-Wiper"; so the big question is: what would be the name of Microsoft Linux?... |
NoDough May 07, 2007 4:51 PM EDT |
Quoting:what would be the name of Microsoft Linux?...Well, seeing that they now have a coalition of companies to help them (Dell with hardware, Apple and Novell with unix-like OSes), they could name it after the coalition. Dell, Apple, Microsoft, Novell. DAMN |

Quoting:Their real strategy is plain ole protection racket- scaring companies into paying for Microsoft-approved Linuxes so they are "protected" from "infringing", and MS gets a piece of the action. You said it TC, its all they have left. Scare tactics and money..lots of it. Look at their attempt to supposedly buy Yahoo, they have nothing of their own that they know is better than anyone else's. So they use what they have, money, to get what they want. What's funny is that the Yahoo announcement had the opposite effect they were looking for. It brought Yahoo's stock up and theirs down...its funny to me.. |

Quoting:Look at their attempt to supposedly buy Yahoo, they have nothing of their own that they know is better than anyone else's. And buying Yahoo won't help them against Google either. The only reason Yahoo is doing well is all the stuff they do *besides* search. The market share of Yahoo Search is in the (high) single digit range. If Live/MSN and Yahoo were to merge they'd have a 15%-20% marketshare, max. You can't beat Google on regular search. The only thing I see displacing Google is a new, smarter, search engine. Perhaps something like Technorati that can search the semantic web. Google is having obvious problems adding new search algorithms so it will be hard for them to catch up (example: it still doesn't index ODF). |

Quoting:Look at their [Microsoft's] attempt to supposedly buy Yahoo, they have nothing of their own that they know is better than anyone else's. So they use what they have, money, to get what they want. Well, they failed. Apparently Yahoo was a tad too expensive for Microsoft. Somewhere around $150 billion IIRC. |
helios May 10, 2007 10:08 AM EDT |
That combined with the (now contested) 150 billion they had to pay ATT, that should leave them pretty much broke... One could only hope. |
