The Slackware installation has never detected video hardware automatically. The "vesafb" driver is sufficiently generic to support nearly all x86 systems, and will provide a working GUI *now*. The sysadmin can choose a better driver, if need be (for example, for GL support), but it isn't necessary for things like OpenOffice.org or Firefox. |

All of the above fell back to the default vesa driver, and manually changing to the nv driver failed. Installing the NVidia proprietary drivers also failed, until we compiled a new kernel without the rivafb driver. |
