Perhaps you should have read the article before getting all bent out of shape. The program being introduced is about training certified RHEL4 administrators so they can also administer SLES 10 systems as well. It's not about migrating RHEL4 systems to SLES 10 systems.

Quoting:It's not about migrating RHEL4 systems to SLES 10 systems.
Actually to a certain degree, this training *IS* about attracting RHEL sysadmins over to SLES. Novell likely felt that it *had* to do this. As is written in the article
Quoting:Matthew Costello, managing director of SmartSource, said that the course also *strongly* equips Red Hat engineers to take the Novell CLP 10 Practicum exam in order to become certified as a Novell Certified Linux Professional 10.
You have, of course, reviewed Novell's NCLP: Novell Certified Linux Professional site at http://www.novell.com/training/certinfo/clp/ yes?? Do you see any significant mention in this site of any non-distro-specific, vendor-neutral requirements similar to the Linux Professional Institute's certification (now up to the LPIC-3) ?? Interesting that LPI's english speaking website at http://www.lpi.org/en/lpi/english *does* show that Novell is actually a Platinum Sponsor of the LPI, but *NOT* RH. hmm........

Perhaps RH will offer some sort of a similar transitional training course at its https://www.redhat.com/training/ site for SuSE, Ubuntu. or whatever else.

I took it as Novell offering an opportunity for sysadmins with certification in one area to become more employable.

Hopping from one distro to another, and back again, *can* be confusing. For instance, one difficulty I'm running into this week is getting a PCI Serial I/O card to port to Ubuntu by following the directions to install it under Redhat and Fedora Core.

suse is doing nothing but dividing the community -

what we need is for the redhat's, suse's, ubuntu's, and sun's to work together not try to steal each other's business.

how about a mcse to novel certified professional class

but they don't want to upset their new daddy.

Your choice of articles to try and make a point was pretty pathetic. Did you actually read the article Darren? It was not really a Microsoft shop anyway. No AD authentication generally means "Not A MS Shop". No MS Exchange generally means "Not A MS Shop". I'm continually amazed how so many people in IT can't really logically think themselves out of a real world paper bag even if both ends were open. Of course it is possible your just still here to shill and turf, paid or not, for Novell.

look at rascalson and his response - pretty much states the facts.

as far as me getting the facts the article you point to has nothing to do with them offering a class that teaches mcse's to adminster suse linux like the redhat class they offer.

they are directly attacking redhat but not microsoft.

and well like I said before they don't want to upset their daddy.

You've heard of competition, right?

> You've heard of competition, right?

You must have missed the announcement that Red Hat has pledged not to steal Novell's customers. They've abandoned the goal of profit maximization and replaced it with a pledge to bring Microsoft customers to Linux, even if they go bankrupt in the process. There's also discussion about changing GPLv3 to make it a violation to change distributions, to prevent Novell from stealing customers.

"you've heard of competition, right?"

sure - all is fair and all that - but wouldn't you think that there is a bigger need for mcse's to learn suse linux than rhces -

oh I forgot suse and windows are more similar than redhat and suse.

Well, having Microsoft attempt to displace Red Hat by market-dumping Novell's distribution doesn't work all that well unless you first pave the way with training, so it's not like this was unexpected. I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't arranged for such courses to be free like how they used to contract DevelopMentor for such things. Maybe that would be too obvious?

By the way, Novell is also now, umm, 'bending' the truth about their relation to the FSF as well.

http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20070317032834650

Novell: "I do want to tell you that Novell is a significant financial contributor to the Free Software Foundation"

FSF: "Novell last gave funds to the FSF in October 2005, when they donated $5K as part of FSF Corporate Patron program. Since their deal with Microsoft was announced we have not asked them to renew as a patron, nor would we."

I think they're too busy seeing what they can learn from the alien spacecraft at Area 51.

@Rascalson and jsusanka

And your misreading of the original article was pathetic.

You're seeing the bogeyman where there is none.

Rascalson, your point nullifies itself - the fact of the matter is that Novell is not backing off from displacing MS - where it can. Can you demonstrate otherwise? No.

Thank you very much for playing - you'll find your consolation prizes in the mail.
