dvdauthor can be used very simply to create a menu-less dvd without editing any XML file, and just using one or two simple option arguments. However, it really is a backend tool, and I wouldnt expect anyone to edit their own XML unless they were scripting something (I use it with a custom set of scripts to author episodic dvd's) And of course all the other native dvd creation tools use dvdauthor and things like growisofs. If you need ultimate control of the VM that dvds provide, I supose you might get into editing the XML if no front end is suitable for what you want to accomplish.

When I do use a front end other than my own scripts, it is one of two tools not mentioned in this article, DVDStyler, and DVDWizard:

This first is a gui that has been much more stable for me than qdvdauthor, and the second is a command line tool that makes a fairly sane and pretty dvd structure mostly automagicly, although it does provide as much control as you want via options.
