Debian only recently dropped support for 386 and only because glibc requires some 486 instructions (and I believe 386 is supported via a kernel patch which emulates these instructions). This was met with protests from users of 386 hardware - it seems there are still quite a bit of them. Anyway, the Debian architecture is still called i386 :)
